Inside Belmond’s Newest Luxury Sleeper Train, The Britannic Explorer, That Connects England and Wales

More than just a nod to the golden age of train travel, this is the first luxury sleeper train to operate between England and Wales.

This summer, Belmond rolls out its newest chapter in luxury rail travel: the Britannic Explorer. Announced last year in an issued press release, this new journey will take to the tracks on July 21, 2025, marking the first such train— a fully-fledged luxury sleeper experience—between England and Wales.

The train promises to be a bold undertaking. While continental Europe has long offered upscale rail experiences, the UK has never had a sleeper train that pairs with immersive itineraries. With this debut, Belmond aims to fill that gap by offering a series of curated three-night journeys through regions such as Wales, Cornwall, and the Lake District, with each route giving an insight into the slower side of British life. The itineraries can be paired to form six-night trips for longer circuits.

Journeys begin and end at London’s Victoria Station. Beyond that, though, the routes veer off the usual tourist track. In Wales, for instance, guests might explore glacial valleys or swim in remote lakes. At the Lake District, options include countryside hikes or time with the kitchen team of Chef Simon Rogan. At Oxfordshire, a formal gala dinner awaits at Raymond Blanc’s Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons.

Design and Aesthetics

But the immersive experiences are not reserved just for off-board itineraries. Within the train, too, similar luxuries await. The 18 en-suite cabins are divided into three Grand Suites, 11 Double Suites, and four Twin Suites. Each of these is outfitted in soft, botanical tones (such as sage, blush, and dusty rose) with oak panelling and hand-embroidered textiles. Bespoke details like wallpapers by Olly Fathers and marine-inspired artworks by Mel Champion round off the look. While the design references traditional country houses, it relies on a cleaner, contemporary interpretation to bring the vision to life. Thank London studio Albion Nord, for these interiors.

The three Grand Suites (Valerian, Elder, and Juniper) are hand-painted with botanical motifs and floral frescoes that mirror the flora along the journey. Each suite comes equipped with a plush bed, lounge seating, and an en suite bathroom with a rainfall shower.

The public spaces maintain a similar, if not the same, level of detailing. In the Observation Car, styled like an old-world apothecary, cabinets line the wall. A low-lit ambience and botanical etchings further cement the vibes. Two dining cars (Malva and Samphire) continue this theme of regional storytelling using texture and tone. Think rattan, British linen, and antique mirrors. On the other hand, the powder rooms are a nod to maritime British with their deep, oceanic hues.

Experiences Onboard the Britannic Explorer

The gastronomic programme aboard the Britannic Explorer is led by Simon Rogan, the chef behind L’Enclume and credited as the pioneer of farm-to-table dining in the UK. The menus on the train may include wild-foraged elements and produce from his own farm at the Lake District. For added indulgence, a black-tie dinner is available at Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons, and afternoon teas in hidden valleys and intimate fireside picnics.

Beyond dining and design, the Britannic Explorer is also a statement about a shift in luxury itself. Steering away from formal spas and theatrical experiences, the train houses a wellness suite designed for restoration and stillness. Created in collaboration with Wildsmith, this wellness suite relies on botanical and mineral-rich formulations and treatments replete with biodynamic principles. The use of locally-sourced ingredients such as calendula, chamomile, rose, and lavender adds to the rejuvenation. The result? A tailored ritual, including a revitalising morning session, a midday purifying treatment, and a calming evening ritual designed to promote restful sleep.

Technically, the train is a restoration of the former Belmond Grand Hibernian, which once operated in Ireland. The repurposed Mark III carriages have been overhauled to meet modern expectations. Fares start at EUR 11,000 (approximately INR 11,04,180) for a three-night itinerary, inclusive of meals, drinks, experience, and service. The cap on 36 guests per departure adds to the exclusivity. Besides, isn’t slow travel the new form of luxury?
