Fire-resistant design is top of mind for many homeowners in California, especially after the wildfires that ravaged parts of Los Angeles this year. Those affected by the recent fires and looking to rebuild in SoCal can look to Northern California for inspiration. There, new and innovative homes addressing fire- and climate-related issues have been built in the destructive aftermath of the Tubbs and Camp Fires, in 2017 and 2018, respectively.

One recent example of incorporating fire protection into a residential building comes out of Healdsburg, in Sonoma County. Studio VARA took the lead on architecture, interior design, and landscaping, resulting in a contemporary estate imbued with warmth from natural materials, plus expansive windows and porches that blend indoor and outdoor living spaces. Designed as a getaway for a couple with three kids, the wine-country home is both energy efficient and fire-resistant.

While concepting the home, the Studio VARA team hiked the 15-acre lot and even camped out on the property during different times of the year. During these excursions, they collected data on the solar and wind patterns, as well as the habits of the local wildlife. These observations were then translated into the home’s design, including the placement of louvers to modulate light and shade and massive windows that both frame the sweeping views afforded by the location and allow for natural lighting and cross-ventilation during the day.

The abode’s exterior is clad in a protective outer shell made of non-combustible standing-seam metal, while the entire house is equipped with a state-of-the-art fire-protection system. This proved fortuitous when the Walbridge Fire of 2020 paused construction on the home. The house also generates enough energy to be off the grid, with its own septic, well, and propane gas supplies. Water for the pool and other uses is heated via solar panels, and there’s battery backup storage for emergencies.

Despite these more technical aspects of the property, the residence retains a welcoming vibe. Measuring in at almost 3,900 square feet, the main home sports a great room with a pitched ceiling and exposed wood beams, while the kitchen’s light-wood paneling is paired with crystal-like pendant lights over the island. In a separate wing, the primary bedroom includes a custom platform bed with integrated floating nightstands and built-in sconces.

With a full outdoor living room, dining area, and kitchen, you could just as easily spend almost all of your time outside. The pool house, covered terrace, and carport add an additional 700 square feet to the property.
