Africa’s Most Unusual Luxury Safari Lodges

Forget the tented camp. These seven African lodges are architectural statements, conservation projects, and design experiences in their own right.

Luxury safaris in Africa have slowly evolved into something far more ambitious than tented camps in the bush. A new breed of lodges across the continent is now becoming architectural statements, conservation projects, and immersive design experiences that deviate from the traditional lodge experience.

These high-end hotels promise immersive, almost unique experiences. While some perch on volcanic ridges overlooking cloud forests, others sit high above vast savannah plains, designed so that the landscape becomes the main event. For travellers who have already done the traditional game drive circuit, these seven properties take their experience one step further.

Singita Sasakwa Lodge, Tanzania

Perched on a hill in the private Grumeti Reserve, Singita looks as though it has been entirely transported from the English countryside to the Serengeti. The lodge is inspired by Edwardian manor houses, with antique furnishings, polished wooden floors, and expansive verandas that afford uninterrupted views across the plains. From the cottages — each of which comes with its own infinity pool — the landscape stretches for miles in every direction, punctuated by wildlife moving across the savannah. Since this part of northern Tanzania is one of the migration corridors of the Serengeti ecosystem, the wildlife spectacle here changes constantly throughout the year.

What Makes it Unique?

The contrast between the formal interiors and the informal, almost untamed, scale of the park outside makes the experience feel almost theatrical.

Lango Lodge, Republic of the Congo

This unexpected safari destination lies far from the savannahs that most travellers associate the African wildlife with. In the Republic of the Congo, Kamba African Rainforest Experiences operates a trio of lodges — Ngaga, Lango, and Mboko — within Odzala-Kokoua National Park, one of Africa’s most pristine rainforest ecosystems. The park spans more than 13,000 square kilometres of the Congo Basin and is home to western lowland gorillas, chimpanzees, forest elephants, and hundreds of bird species.

Lango Lodge offers guests an unparalleled encounter with one of the world’s last pristine rainforests. Perched above the Bai, the lodge provides uninterrupted views of the waterhole, where forest elephants, bongo, buffalo, and other wildlife gather.

What Makes it Unique?

With only a handful of guests accommodated at a time, the experience offers rare access to one of Africa’s least-visited wilderness regions.

Angama Mara, Kenya

If there’s ever a lodge defined entirely by its setting, it's Angama Mara. The property sits high on the edge of the Great Rift Valley escarpment, about 300 metres above the Maasai Mara below. The name “Angama,” meaning “suspended mid-air,” gives you the sensation of standing on the lodge’s terrace and looking out across the plains where elephants, lions, and migrating wildebeest move through the ecosystem. The suites are set on the edge of the cliff, and come with floor-to-ceiling glass walls that erase the boundary between interior and landscape.

What Makes it Unique?

Angama Mara’s vantage point changes the way guests experience safari: Wildlife sightings often begin before you even leave the lodge, and sunrise balloon flights drift past at eye level. The result is a safari that feels less embedded within the landscape and more like watching the entire ecosystem unfold from a cinematic viewpoint.

Wilderness Bisate Lodge, Rwanda

Set within a natural amphitheatre formed by an ancient volcanic cone, the Wilderness Bisate Lodge offers one of the most dramatic backdrops of any safari property in Africa. The lodge sits near Volcanoes National Park, which is the gateway to Rwanda’s famous gorilla trekking experiences. Its six domed villas are inspired by traditional Rwandan royal palaces, effectively merging cultural architecture with contemporary luxury. There’s also a wine cellar, library, spa, restaurant, and tree nursery on the property. From the terraces, the Virunga Volcanoes rise dramatically above the surrounding forest, often shrouded in mist. The lodge also participates in reforestation efforts in the surrounding area, planting indigenous trees to restore the volcanic slopes, making the stay as much about conservation as it is about luxury.

What Makes it Unique?

It’s set inside a volcanic amphitheatre with stunning vistas of the Bisoke, Karisimbi, and Mikeno volcanoes.

&Beyond Sandibe Okavango Safari Lodge, Botswana

The Okavango is one of Africa’s most remarkable ecosystems: A vast inland delta where seasonal floods create lagoons and channels that attract enormous concentrations of wildlife. The &Beyond Sandibe Okavango Safari Lodge is designed to resemble the organic curves of wildlife — often compared to the scales of a pangolin. The structure twists through the surrounding forest in a way that almost mirrors the movement of the Delta itself. The lodge has exclusive traversing rights over a vast 22,500 hectares (55,600 acres) of wildlife land bordering the Moremi Game Reserve, meaning Big Five sightings are almost guaranteed. The lodge has 12 air-conditioned suites, private plunge pools, and an ‘interactive’ kitchen.

What Makes it Unique?

Combined with its setting in one of Africa’s richest wetland ecosystems, where wildlife viewing happens by boat, mokoro canoe, and game drive, the lodge feels less like a building and more like a continuation of the surrounding landscape.

Wilderness Desert Rhino Camp, Namibia

Namibia’s landscapes could not be more different from the lush wetlands of Botswana. At Wilderness Desert Rhino Camp, the terrain is stark and elemental, encompassing mountain ridges, gravel plains, and vast desert skies. The camp is located in the remote Kunene region, within Palmwag Concession — one of the last refuges for wild black rhinos — and plays an active role in protecting the species. A 2024 refurbishment upgraded the camp’s guest areas, which now include six tented suites. Guests often track rhinos on foot with specialist guides, moving quietly through the terrain.

What Makes it Unique?

This is one of Africa’s most conservation-focussed safari experiences. The camp supports efforts to protect the critically endangered desert-adapted black rhino. Tracking these animals on foot through Namibia’s rugged landscape offers a far more intimate wildlife experience than traditional game drives.

Perhaps the most unusual safari hotel in Africa, Kruger Shalati - The Train on the Bridge sits inside a restored train that’s suspended above the Sabie River. The carriages are permanently stationed on a railway bridge inside Kruger National Park, with glass-walled suites overlooking the riverbanks. The hotel has 31 rooms, including four Train Carriage Suites and seven Bridge House Suites, along with an overhanging pool. Kruger Shalati offers game drive encounters in the national park and authentic African food with stunning views of the Sabie River.
