There is a particular kind of stillness to falling asleep with a nurse shark asleep just outside your window, the room lit only by the blue wash of water and whatever's swimming past it. Fewer than a dozen properties in the world can actually offer that, a bedroom genuinely below the waterline, and the distinction is worth knowing before booking, since much of what gets marketed as an "underwater luxury hotel" is really a very good fish tank with a suite attached.
The very first genuine one wasn't even built as a hotel. Jules' Undersea Lodge, sitting in a Key Largo lagoon in Florida, began life in the 1970s as La Chalupa, an underwater research habitat off the coast of Puerto Rico, before being relocated and reopened in 1986 as a hotel guests could only reach by scuba diving 21 feet down and surfacing through a "moon pool" cut into the floor. It's hosted, at various points, Aerosmith's Steven Tyler, actor Tim Allen, and former Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, and even played a small role in space research, serving as the site of a 1995 link-up between the lodge and astronaut Mike Gernhardt aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour, one hundred feet underwater speaking to a man in orbit. If you're on the lookout for a stay that stands out from the rest, below is a list of five properties you need to check out.
The Muraka is the world's first undersea residence, a two-level, 550-square-metre structure accommodating up to eight guests across three ensuite bedrooms, two above water and one below. The underwater master suite sits beneath a 180-degree curved acrylic dome roughly 16 feet under the surface of the Indian Ocean, reached by a spiral staircase or private elevator, with floor-to-ceiling glass continuing through the bathroom and walk-in closet. The name itself means "coral" in Dhivehi, and the residence took four years to engineer. Rates aren't published; villa pricing excludes mandatory seaplane or speedboat transfers, and a compulsory New Year's Eve supplement of USD 1,093.95 (approx. Rs. 1,04,800) per adult applies for stays on December 31.

Atlantis operates two Underwater Suites, Poseidon and Neptune, each a 165-square-metre, one-king-bed suite accommodating up to three adults, set beside the resort's Ambassador Lagoon and home to more than 65,000 marine animals. The suite includes 24/7 butler service, in-suite check-in, a private elevator and its own kitchen, alongside resort-wide privileges including Imperial Club Lounge access and unlimited entry to Aquaventure waterpark. As with the Muraka, Atlantis does not publish a fixed nightly rate for the suite; third-party travel reporting has placed it anywhere from USD 7,000 to USD 15,000 (approx. Rs. 6.7 lakh to Rs. 14.4 lakh) a night depending on season and demand.

Housed within the wider Resorts World Sentosa complex, the Equarius Ocean Suites are two-storey townhouses with a land-facing patio and outdoor jacuzzi upstairs and an underwater view of roughly 40,000 fish downstairs, drawn from the aquarium now rebranded as the Singapore Oceanarium, which reopened in 2025. Guests also get access to SEA, the resort's underwater fine-dining restaurant. It's the most accessible property on this list by both geography, a short ride from central Singapore rather than a remote island, and by reported price, with third-party listings pricing the suites under USD 2,000 (approx. Rs. 1.9 lakh) a night.

The Manta Resort's Underwater Room is a floating, three-level private structure anchored roughly 250 metres offshore within the Pemba Channel, a protected marine conservation area recognised as a coral climate refuge. The bedroom itself sits about four metres below the surface, wrapped in close to 360 degrees of glass, with a king bed as the sole furnishing choice and an above-water deck for meals, sunbathing and stargazing. The original room was rebuilt and relaunched as an entirely new structure at the end of 2025, solar-powered and designed with all profits channelled into local marine conservation. Stays include daily snorkelling, one wellness treatment a day, and all meals and drinks; earlier iterations of the room were reported in the USD 900-1,840 (approx. Rs. 86,200-1,76,300) range, though the rebuilt version's current rate is quoted only on enquiry.

Built into the rock face of a flooded former quarry roughly 88 metres deep in Shanghai's Songjiang district, this is the only hotel on this list where an underwater stay comes with a city, rather than an island, on the other side of the door. Of its roughly 330 rooms, six are Duplex Suites with an Underwater View on the property's two lowest, fully submerged levels, looking into a custom-built aquarium; the property also runs Mr. Fisher, an underwater seafood restaurant. Standard rooms here have been reported around CNY 2,000 (approx. Rs. 23,700) a night, making it the most accessible property on this list in absolute terms, though the underwater suites themselves carry a premium quoted only at the time of booking.
