After years at the helm of some of the most complex mechanical creations at Audemars Piguet, Michael Friedman has stepped into the world of independence with extraordinary clarity. In nearly three decades of high horology, Friedman became known not only for mastering complications but also for his ability to communicate the poetry behind them. With his new maison, Pattern Recognition, he begins a chapter that is entirely his own. His philosophy is simple yet profound. Time does not merely pass. Time shapes emotion, memory and meaning.
The debut timepiece, called B Theory, feels less like a product launch and more like the unveiling of an idea. It is an astronomical tourbillon curved to follow the natural arc of the wrist, encased in titanium. At the centre floats a flying tourbillon. Above it, a diamond set representation of the moon tracks the sky of the wearer’s home location. Beneath it, time appears discreetly on the inner wrist, reserved for the wearer alone. The contours draw inspiration from the elegant curved wristwatches of the 1920s, yet the execution feels entirely contemporary. The case measures 52 millimetres by 32 millimetres and stands only 9.9 millimetres tall, giving the watch presence without weight.
B Theory is the meeting point of analogue tradition and modern engineering. Each component was developed with collaborators known for their mastery. Hand-decorated bridges sit alongside advanced polymer crystal elements. The movement is hand-wound and visible in a sculptural, open architecture. The result is a watch that does not simply measure time. It frames it. It invites the wearer to pause, to look closely, to connect. Friedman has created a watch that treats time not as a number, but as an experience.
B Theory will be available in two variations. On a titanium bracelet, the price is CHF 150,000, which is approximately USD 186,000 or ₹1.66 crore. On a strap, the price is CHF 120,000, roughly USD 149,000 or ₹1.33 crore. Production numbers remain undisclosed, but quantities are expected to be very limited, with the first deliveries scheduled for the third quarter of 2026.
With Pattern Recognition, Michael Friedman presents an approach to watchmaking that is deeply emotional and fiercely creative. B Theory is not simply another high complication. It is a new perspective on the relationship between time, design and the human experience.
