Arnold & Son’s Time Pyramid Malachite Editions Make Every Tick a Work of Art

A mesmerising fusion of British heritage, architectural symmetry, and gemstone allure.

Arnold & Son has a knack for turning mechanical complexity into something poetic, and the latest chapter in the Time Pyramid collection is proof of that confidence. The new Time Pyramid 42.5 Malachite Editions, created in a small series of eight pieces in 5N red gold and eight in platinum, feel like the kind of watches that quietly draw you in. The familiar architecture of the Time Pyramid remains, but the presence of malachite changes the mood entirely, giving the piece an almost meditative aura.

The 42.5 millimetre case, crafted either in warm red gold or in a more discreet platinum, acts as a subtle frame. A slim bezel and a softly curved sapphire crystal open up the dial completely, and the eye falls straight onto the A&S1615 calibre that appears to float inside. The layout is unmistakably Time Pyramid, with the balance wheel positioned at 12 o’clock, the twin power reserve indicators aligned along the centre, and the crown tucked neatly between the lugs at 6 o’clock. The whole idea is to let the movement breathe, and it works beautifully.

A Tradition of Inventive Design

The design language may look contemporary, but it has a very old soul. Arnold & Son revisited an ornamental precision regulator clock crafted in the 1830s by John Roger Arnold, a piece that celebrated clean geometry and mechanical order. Those same instincts come through here. Circles, cut-outs and stacked layers guide your gaze from one element to another, almost as if you are travelling through a small architectural structure rather than simply looking at a watch.

The malachite disc that sits behind the movement is where the personality of the watch really unfolds. Turn the watch over, and the stone reveals itself fully. Historically linked with protection and emotional balance, malachite brings a sense of calm richness to the composition. Its natural green bands echo the movement’s symmetry, creating a quiet conversation between nature and engineering.

An Airy, Architectural Calibre

The A&S1615 calibre is impressively thin at 4.4 millimetres. The gear train runs in a straight line from the twin barrels at 6 o’clock to the regulating organ at 12. Classical watchmaking elements such as the escape wheel, Swiss lever and screw balance add a grounding sense of familiarity. The overall effect is light and structured at the same time, almost as if the gears and bridges were suspended in the air.

The twin power reserve indicators sit on either side of the gear train, and their arcs are engraved on the underside of the upper sapphire crystal. As the barrels feed energy through the system, the hands rise and fall in opposition, giving you a visual sense of how the movement is breathing. Once fully wound, the two barrels provide around 90 hours of power and maintain a reassuringly steady force throughout.
