The new Seiko Edo Purple Watches Collection is a reminder that the best watches don't always tell new stories. Sometimes, they bring old ones back to life. The Seiko anniversary collection spans 6 limited-edition watches across some of the company's best-known families, including King Seiko, Prospex Alpinist, Presage Cocktail Time, Seiko 5 Sports and Astron. Each interprets Edo Purple differently, from rich sunburst finishes to textured dials that shift beautifully as they catch the light.
The collection also spans a wide price range. It begins at $450 for the Seiko 5 Sports, making the anniversary collection accessible to first-time enthusiasts while leaving plenty for seasoned collectors to explore.
The Seiko Prospex Alpinist HBC006 is arguably the most traditionalist of the six. Its purple sunray dial gives the outdoors-oriented watch a more refined character, while the automatic calibre 6R55 offers a 72-hour power reserve. Limited to 7,000 pieces, it is the kind of watch that can move comfortably between a weekend outdoors and a more dressed-up setting.
The Prospex Speedtimer HBJ005 takes Edo Purple in a sportier direction. Its solar-powered chronograph calibre V192 means there's no regular battery change to worry about, while the purple dial and contrasting details give the familiar racing-inspired silhouette a considerably more unexpected look. Seiko is producing 8,000 examples.
At the more technical end of the collection sits the Astron GPS Solar, which brings Seiko's Edo Purple theme into its most technologically advanced territory. Rather than relying on a traditional mechanical movement, the GPS Solar system automatically adjusts the time and time zone using GPS signals. It's a fitting contrast to the historical inspiration behind the colour: centuries-old Japanese aesthetics meeting modern watch technology.
The Presage Cocktail Time HCB006 is perhaps the most naturally suited to the purple treatment. Its richly coloured dial plays into the collection's more sophisticated side, while the automatic calibre 4R34 adds a GMT function. Limited to 6,000 pieces, it brings a dressier interpretation of Edo Purple to the lineup.
Then there's the Seiko 5 Sports HDB003, which takes the colour to somewhere that is far more casual. Inspired by the familiar sporty silhouette of the collection, its purple dial gives an everyday watch a distinctive twist. With 9,999 pieces planned, it is also the most widely produced of the six, making it the natural entry point into the anniversary collection.
The unexpected one is the Seiko Selection Rotocall HFL001. Inspired by a 1982 digital design, it brings a distinctly retro personality to an otherwise mechanically focused collection. Its rotating switch-style control is what makes it stand apart, proving that Edo Purple doesn't necessarily have to mean a traditional watch.
The purple dial might be what first draws you in, but it's everything around it that makes these watches interesting. Across the collection, Seiko pairs the distinctive purple dials with polished stainless-steel cases, thoughtfully finished bracelets and reliable in-house movements ranging from automatic calibres to GPS Solar technology, depending on the model.
