Pink Floyd Is Back On Tape, But Should You Buy It? Find Out Here

Having spent over three decades tracking the evolution of audio formats in search of the best possible communicator of Dark Side of the Moon, life has come full circle. From lusting after Nakamichi’s legendary Dragon deck pushing magnetic tape to impossible heights, mourning the brilliant yet doomed fates of Digital Compact Cassette (DCC) and MiniDisc, and surviving the tinny compression of early MP3s, we are back to experiencing analog in all its glory, warts and all. While I can still get on board with vinyl culture, there is a quiet but focused cassette revival that has left me utterly bewildered.

Cultural Currency

Objectively speaking, compact cassettes are a deeply compromised medium. Compared to 24-bit/192kHz lossless streaming or a finely calibrated turntable, tape carries inherent hiss, limited frequency response, and mechanical wow and flutter. Yet here we are, with magnetic tape sales posting double-digit annual growth, culminating in the launch of the Pink Floyd WE-001, a $199 box set built around a Bluetooth-equipped tape deck and an exclusive, first-ever cassette release of the album's 50th anniversary remaster.

Original Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason, who still keeps his old Nakamichi for reference, has called this cassette a "major breakthrough," which is generous phrasing for a medium whose frequency response tops out around 14.5kHz against streaming's effectively unlimited ceiling. Housed in an anodised aluminum chassis bearing the iconic prism artwork of The Dark Side of the Moon, it feels like a fascinating anomaly.

Why are both seasoned listeners and young enthusiasts embracing a format we spent decades trying to engineer out of existence? What could seem like fleeting nostalgia is actually a phenomenon now being dubbed as anemoia, the ache for a past never personally lived, and the pattern shows up everywhere. From the resurgence of vinyl led by millennials to wired earbuds being embraced by Gen Zs and the comeback of the cassette being sold as a collector’s item. The perfect pushback against algorithmically engineered bottomless pits of social media feeds and AI-infected playlists is the satisfying click of a push button on a cassette player or coming to the end of Side A and manually flipping over to Side B.

Taking agency back over your content and having a tangible connection to it surpasses the convenience and unemotional experience of everything online. The sequential nature of both cassettes and vinyl forces you to listen more intently and offers a respite from the ephemeral and disposable nature of song no. 72 on a ‘Midnight Grooves’ Spotify playlist.

Abrasion Over Algorithm

The collaboration between We Are Rewind and Pink Floyd targets this very psychological impulse with surgical precision. Engineered in 1973 by Alan Parsons, The Dark Side of the Moon was created as a continuous, unified piece of sonic art meant to be savoured from start to finish. Standing in stark contrast to today's fragmented playlist culture, it is the perfect antithesis of what big tech is trying to serve us. So while the cassette may not make as big a comeback as vinyl and I genuinely hope not, it does indicate that people are ready to pay for exclusivity. Even if it caps their favourite tunes at 14kHz.
