Google Wants A Seat At The Mac Table With Its Newly Launched Googlebook

The template for ultrabooks created by the MacBook Air back in 2008 didn’t change for more than a decade until Google came up with the concept of Chromebooks. But the way we use our phones and what we do with our laptops has changed considerably in the last couple of years since the advent of AI.

Googlebook isn’t an incremental refresh of a decade-old idea. It's a categorical break from it. Aimed at the affluent, creative professional who spends equal amounts of time on Claude and Canva, it is built on the Android tech stack, with the desktop foundations of ChromeOS. The result is seamless connectivity between your Android device and the apps on your phone with Googlebook.

What Makes A Googlebook Different?

Android apps run as native, first-class desktop citizens and not illegal migrants inside an emulator container. So you can start a task on your Android phone and take it to the Googlebook laptop, access files on the phone directly from the Googlebook, or cast any of the million-plus apps from your phone. Of course, Google has put Gemini AI at the centre of it all so you can wiggle the mouse pointer to summon contextual AI suggestions for wherever the cursor rests. Cast My Apps lets an Android phone's apps open directly on the laptop with nothing to install, and Quick Access pulls files off the phone without a transfer. It's the phone-to-laptop continuity Apple has sold for a decade, rebuilt for a far larger Android base.

What Makes It Premium?

Historically, Windows and ChromeOS based laptops have left the premium Mac users wanting for better build, processors and a frictionless experience. But with Googlebook, hardware backs the ambition. Every launch model starts at 16GB of RAM and 256GB to 512GB of storage, with OLED touchscreens hitting at least 500 nits. Three of the five models announced run Intel's new Panther Lake silicon, two run Qualcomm's Snapdragon X Elite with premium chassis material like machined aluminium, magnesium alloy, or carbon fibre across the board. They all use glass haptic trackpads and fingerprint sensors and Google has also revived the Glowbar, a light strip from the old Chromebook Pixel days, that shows battery level and pulses when Gemini is in use.

What It Means For Android?

Google clearly wants to compete with the well-established MacBook Air and the tight ecosystem integration Apple has exclusively enjoyed until now with iPadOS, MacOS, iOS, tvOS, and WatchOS all working in sync. Although not as wide as Apple's, the Android user base is exponentially larger than iOS, and the Googlebook is a giant step in the right direction for Google to close that gap. Hardware options from Acer, Lenovo, HP, Asus, and Dell have prices starting from $1300, and US units ship from October 4th, with Canada, the UK, Ireland, France, Germany, and Australia following a day later. There’s no word on Indian availability yet, despite Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, and Lenovo all running deep retail networks here already. For a market that is yearning for premium Android hardware all the time, the silence is deafening, and we are awaiting even the slightest hint from Google on an India launch date.
