The concept highlights an ‘in it to win it’ ambition at the pinnacle of motorsport for a brand that has already proved its mettle in the world of rallying and circuit racing time and again.

While this may seem like news for a hardcore motorsport enthusiast, fact is Audi’s reveal of the new R26 Formula 1 concept is one of the first expressions of what the brand’s new visual identity will be. “We are implementing a unifying design language that draws together every aspect of our organisation,” said Massimo Frascella, Audi’s chief creative office at the unveil last night in Munich, Germany.

Minimalist graphic surfaces featuring precise geometric cuts that integrate into the racing car’s form indicate the direction of the design language that we can expect from Ingolstadt. The colour palette, too, is undergoing a change with Audi mixing a new shade of the signature red with carbon black and titanium. The iconic four ring logo has been painted in the new shade of red, too. “This makes the Formula 1 project a pioneer for the new brand identity, which will be rolled out in the future for both the F1 team and Audi as a whole,” Massimo said.

Beyond aesthetics, Audi will also use the F1 platform to showcase its philosophy of Vorsprung durch Technik (progress through technology). In fact, the company has revealed that the Formula 1 project is a strategic flagship that reflects the brand’s technological, cultural and entrepreneurial realignment, and is intended to inspire Audi customers worldwide as well as employees of the four rings.

“It is the next chapter in the company’s renewal. Formula 1 will be a catalyst for change towards a leaner, faster and more innovative Audi,” said Gernot Döllner, Audi’s CEO. “We are not entering Formula 1 just to be there. We want to win. At the same time, we know that you don’t become a top team in Formula 1 overnight,” he added. The goal, therefore, is to be in a position to contend for the World Championship title by 2030.

Is it an achievable goal? If anyone can, then it’s Audi. The brand, known for its classy saloons and SUVs, also has a rich motorsport legacy to draw from. In the 1980s, Audi brought the four-wheel-drive Quattro to the rough and tumble world of Group B rallying and not just won, but also changed the way the world competed in rallying. At Le Mans, Audi again shattered established convention by fielding, and eventually winning, the gruelling 24-hour race with a diesel car in a world dominated by petrol engines. Since then, folks at Ingolstadt have successfully raced hybrids and electric cars.

Then, there is the insanely difficult Dakar Rally. This time, Audi hopes to leverage F1 as a test bed for future innovations. Its press release said that the short development cycles, minimal chain of command, and quick decisions will serve as a model for the company—which is great news because F1 is currently a tech driver for electric mobility and sustainable fuels, both significant for future production models in a world where emission norms are getting stricter and the search for new ways of propelling personal, and even commercial, transport is getting hotter.

The powertrain being developed for the final 'race-ready' version of the R26 concept started in 2022. It comprises a turbocharged 1.6-litre V6 internal combustion engine coupled with an energy recovery system, an electric motor generator, and an electronic control unit. A matching transmission is also in the works at the Audi F1 team’s home in Neuburg an der Donau, Germany.

While the team is tight-lipped about the powertrain’s output, it’s happy to tell us that over the years, the output figure of the electric motor has been tripled. The team will have its full public debut in January 2026 ahead of its F1 debut at the season opener in Adelaide, Australia on March 6-8, 2026. Like all other teams, Audi will compete with two cars, one piloted by the experienced German driver Nico Hülkenberg, and the other by the young and talented Brazilian Gabriel Bortoleto. The team will be managed by former Ferrari Team Principal Mattia Binotto along with Jonathan Wheatley.

“Formula 1 is more than just motorsport. It’s entertainment, emotion, technology– and also a challenge. But it is precisely this combination that takes us where we want to go: inspiring new customer groups for Audi,” explained Audi AG CFO Jürgen Rittersberger.
