Today, on June 15, security is tight in the French city of Évian-les-Bains, a quaint township south of Lake Geneva. Nearby, Swiss soldiers have set up precautionary fencing along the shore of Lake Geneva in Lausanne; wooden barricades around the Grand Theatre in Geneva are up, and some facades have been boarded in anticipation of protests.

At the summit, French President Emmanuel Macron, convener and organiser, hosts his world-leader colleagues at the G7 summit. The global congress is expected to go on until June 17. For all of the summit, the heads of state will be quartered at the Hôtel Royal in Évian-les-Bains, an establishment whose services are only paralleled by its regality. Among others that the hotel has been host to are Queen Elizabeth II, Greta Garbo, and Aga Khan III.

The History of Hôtel Royal

Commissioned by the Société des Eaux Minérales d’Évian, Hôtel Royal opened in 1909. By the book, it is known that the property was built for King Edward VII of the United Kingdom. The monarch, however, passed away without ever having set foot inside the hotel's premises. Over the century to come, the hotel cemented its reputation not only as the star of Évian but also as one of Europe's finest, attracting aristocrats, bureaucrats, politicians, celebrities, and social elites who could afford the restorative qualities of the city's renowned mineral waters.

Built in the glorious Belle Époque era, the hotel's architecture remains its defining feature. Its grand façades, ornate interiors, and expansive public spaces evoke the golden age of European lakeside tourism, adding quite the character to the building. Though extensively renovated over the years, it has retained its sense of old-world prestige and charm that distinguishes it sharply from its modern, luxury counterparts.

Hôtel Royal occupies one of the most enviable spots in all of France. Perched on a slight hillside commanding vast parklands overlooking Lake Geneva, it makes for panoramic sights across the water towards Switzerland and the Alps beyond.

Even its host city, Évian-les-Bains, is a fairly compact spa town with a population of fewer than 10,000 residents. Internationally known for the mineral water that bears its name, the town is also known for its thermal baths, Belle Époque architecture, and its history as a venue for major diplomatic gatherings. The choice of Évian for the 2026 G7 summit also hardly comes as unprecedented; the town previously hosted the G8 summit in 2003, making it one of the few locations to welcome global leaders on multiple occasions.

From the hotel, Geneva Airport is less than an hour away, giving the property ready access while maintaining a sense of seclusion as well. For summit organisers, the combination of accessibility and security is particularly valuable.

Inside Hôtel Royal

Hôtel Royal forms part of the wider Évian Resort, a sprawling estate that includes a vast 18-hole golf course, pickleball and tennis courts, wellness spaces, multiple restaurants and dining venues, a casino, and a gargantuan concert hall.

The hotel offers more than 150 rooms and suites, several with private balconies overlooking Lake Geneva. The most coveted of the rooms is Suite Royale, intended for Edward VII but never occupied by him. It is a huge 207 sq m apartment-style affair with two bathrooms, a billiard table, and, objectively, the best balcony in the building with unmatched views across the Lake. One night here costs about EUR 8,700 (Rs 9,57,234 approximately).

Interiors are a mix of elegance and contemporary comfort, featuring marble bathrooms, period-inspired furnishing, and generous living spaces. Here, entry-level rooms feel notably spacious by European luxury-hotel standards, if reviews were something to go by.

Public areas are equally impressive. Grand lounges, sweeping staircases, and lake-facing terraces whip up an atmosphere that likens it to stately residences rather than a conventional hotel. Throughout the property, large windows frame views of the water and mountains, ensuring the landscape remains a constant presence.

Food and Drink

The centre attraction within the realm of food and beverage in the hotel is Les Fresques, named after the remarkable painted ceilings that dominate its dining room. The restaurant dons a Michelin star and showcases produce from Haute-Savoie and the broader Alpine region. Menus frequently feature fish from nearby lakes, mountain cheese, seasonal vegetables, and ingredients sourced from local producers. The dining room itself is as notable as the food, with ornate interiors and a flying silver trolley serving food.

Elsewhere, guests can dine at La Véranda, which offers a more relaxed atmosphere and terrace seating overlooking the water. Breakfast here is reportedly one of the hotel's underrated pleasures. Rather than a hurried buffet experience, mornings unfold against panoramic views of the Lake, with guests able to watch boats crossing between France and Switzerland while dining.

Wellness and Recreation

The Évian Resort's wellness facilities are among the finest in France. The recently added EvianSPA features an indoor pool, Alpine-themed treatment rooms, beauty salon, and more. The showstopping outdoor infinity pool, heated to 28 degrees year-round, also tempts swimmers simply by its sight.

Golf is another major draw. Once the G7 summit is over, July will bring to the hotel its usual Amundi Evian Championship, one of the most prestigious tournaments in women’s golf. The course’s elevated position provides extraordinary views of Lake Geneva and the Alps, helping cement the resort’s reputation as a premier leisure destination.

Guests can also access tennis courts, walking trails, and various outdoor activities throughout the estate.
