On November 28, 2025, Doha's Education City will unveil Lawh Wa Qalam: M.F. Husain Museum, the first institution globally dedicated to the life and work of Maqbool Fida Husain. Commissioned by the Qatar Foundation, this 3,000-square-meter museum stands as a testament to Husain's legacy, featuring his paintings, films, poetry, installations, and photography.

The museum's design draws inspiration from a 2008 sketch by Husain himself, showcasing a blue structure adorned with Arabic letter-like apertures and a white column reminiscent of a minaret. This architectural homage reflects the fusion of traditional and modern elements, encapsulating Husain's artistic ethos. The building itself is a dialogue between form and imagination, inviting visitors to step into Husain’s creative universe even before entering its galleries.

A Personal Connection

Husain, often hailed as "India's Picasso," sought refuge in Doha after facing controversies in India. In 2010, he accepted honorary Qatari citizenship, solidifying his bond with the nation. The museum not only celebrates his art but also honours his personal journey—a life marked by fearless creativity, global travels, and a relentless pursuit of expression that transcended borders.

Curated Collections

Visitors will experience a curated selection of Husain's works spanning from the 1950s to his passing in 2011. Highlights include his final masterpiece, Seeroo fi al ardh, offering intimate insights into his evolving artistic narrative. From vibrant depictions of Indian mythology to abstract explorations of human emotion, each gallery immerses guests in the colours, textures, and energy that defined Husain’s career.

Cultural Significance

The museum’s establishment underscores Qatar's commitment to preserving and promoting global art heritage. It serves as a cultural bridge, fostering dialogue between Eastern and Western artistic traditions and providing a platform for cross-cultural exchange. For art enthusiasts and collectors, the museum presents an unparalleled opportunity to engage with Husain’s oeuvre in an immersive setting. Its location within Education City positions it alongside other cultural landmarks, making it a must-visit destination for those seeking to explore the confluence of art, culture, and history.

Lawh Wa Qalam is more than a museum; it is a living tribute to an artist whose work continues to inspire generations. Walking through its galleries, one can feel the pulse of Husain’s imagination, the depth of his curiosity, and the universality of his vision. Here, art is not merely observed but truly experienced, offering a rare chance to connect with a creative spirit that knew no boundaries. For Doha, for Qatar, and for the world, the museum is a celebration of art’s enduring power to cross time, place, and circumstance.
