Tyeb Mehta’s Rickshaw Puller (2002) has sold for Rs 69.1 crore at the inaugural auction of Volte Una, setting a new auction record for the Indian modernist artist. The acrylic-on-canvas painting, which attracted multiple bidders in the final minutes of the sale on October 12, 2026, surpassed the previous record of Rs 61.80 crore achieved by Trussed Bull in April 2025. The result also places Rickshaw Puller fourth among the highest-priced Indian artworks sold at auction, measured in Indian rupees, according to Volte Una.

A Landmark Sale For Tyeb Mehta

Created in 2002, during the final decade of Mehta’s career, Rickshaw Puller returns to a figure that recurred in his later work. Its sale marks a significant result for an artist whose paintings continue to command substantial attention in the Indian art market.

The work was introduced to a select group of collectors through private viewings across major art hubs before the auction. The approach reflects Volte Una’s model of presenting a single artwork at a time, allowing prospective buyers to examine the work before placing their bids. The buyer’s identity has not been disclosed.

The Rs 69.1-crore result overtakes the previous auction benchmark set by Trussed Bull, which sold for Rs 61.80 crore in April 2025. Beyond establishing a new high for Mehta, the sale places the painting among the most expensive Indian artworks sold at auction in rupee terms.

Volte Una’s Single-Lot Auction Model

Operated by Dubai-based Volte Arts DWC LLC, Volte Una is a single-lot auction platform specialising in what it describes as museum-grade Indian art. Each sale features one work, offered to a registered group of vetted bidders through telephone and online bidding, without a physical saleroom.

The platform’s approach departs from the traditional auction-house format, in which numerous works are presented within a scheduled sale. By concentrating on a single object, Volte Una aims to give the artwork individual attention while allowing collectors to engage with it privately and at their own pace.

The platform also places emphasis on its fee structure. Founder Tushar Jiwarajka said the model significantly reduces the traditional buyer’s premium, with the stated aim of returning more value to consignors and successful bidders. Volte Una positions this as a more direct and transparent route between owners of significant artworks and prospective buyers.

Tyeb Mehta And The Language Of Modern Indian Art

Tyeb Mehta (1925–2009) was one of the leading figures of modern Indian art and a member of the generation of artists who helped shape its post-Independence trajectory. Born in Kapadvanj, Gujarat, and raised in Mumbai, Mehta studied at the Sir J. J. School of Art. His early career unfolded against the backdrop of a rapidly changing Indian art scene, in which artists were negotiating new visual languages beyond academic realism.

Mehta’s paintings are known for their sharply delineated forms, compressed compositions and emotionally charged subjects. The human figure, often rendered in states of physical or psychological tension, remained central to his practice. His recurring subjects included figures in anguish, falling figures, bulls and the Mahishasura motif. Rather than relying on elaborate detail, he used the relationship between form, colour and space to convey conflict and unease.

The rickshaw puller belongs to a body of work that draws attention to the human figure and the physical demands of labour. In Rickshaw Puller (2002), the subject also situates the painting within Mehta’s late-career engagement with figures encountered in everyday life. The Rs 69.1-crore sale adds a new auction benchmark to the market history of an artist whose work occupies a central place in the story of Indian modernism.

What's In Store

Following its inaugural sale, Volte Una has announced its next auction for the end of November 2026. The forthcoming offering will feature a work by M. F. Husain from the renowned Herwitz Collection. The platform is also accepting applications from prospective consignors.

With Rickshaw Puller, Volte Una’s debut has opened with a record-setting result for one of Indian modernism’s most recognised figures. Whether the single-lot format can sustain comparable momentum across subsequent offerings will become clearer as the platform brings more significant works to market.
