A decade ago, Patna may not have featured on the cultural itineraries of many international travellers. Yet, today Patna's Bihar Museum has found itself in the company of some of the world's most celebrated cultural institutions. Ranked ninth in Worth a Journey's World’s 100 Best Museums 2026 list, the museum has secured a position ahead of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, popularly known as The Met, which ranks tenth, and the Louvre in Paris, which features at number 31, while Mexico City’s Museo Nacional de Antropología takes the top spot. The recognition also makes it the highest-ranked museum in Asia and the only Indian institution to feature in this year's top 100. Rankings are never the final word on quality, but this one deserves attention, and a little national pride.

A Young Museum

The list is compiled by Worth a Journey, a Munich-based travel guide, and draws on visitor reviews, data analysis and on-site assessments. That matters, because it rewards the experience of actually walking through a museum instead of the size of its collection or the fame of its name. The Bihar Museum is also remarkably young. It opened in 2015 to give the state’s historical artefacts a larger, better-equipped home, and several objects were moved over from the older Patna Museum.

Many of its rivals have had two centuries to refine their offer, which makes the achievement more striking. Different lists use different methods, so it would be unwise to treat the position as a final verdict. Even so, a top-ten place alongside the Prado and Denmark’s Louisiana Museum of Modern Art is a genuine moment for Bihar.

Architecture That Lets The Art Breathe

Spread across more than 13 acres on Bailey Road, the museum is a landmark in its own right. It was designed by the Pritzker Prize-winning Japanese architect Fumihiko Maki, working with Mumbai-based Opolis Architects. Not imposing on one block, the layout is a series of interconnected buildings, landscaped courtyards and generous galleries, built with natural materials and plenty of open space.

Visitors drift from one section to the next without feeling herded, and the lighting is carefully judged, which makes a real difference to how sculptures and manuscripts are seen. The building has a clear identity, yet it never competes with the objects inside.

Something For Everyone

The galleries here follow Bihar’s history from ancient civilisations to 1764 through sculpture, archaeological finds, coins, manuscripts and folk art. The star of the place is the Didarganj Yakshi, a polished Mauryan-era sandstone figure of a woman holding a fly whisk. It was found near Patna in 1917 and is often called the Mona Lisa of India. Alongside it sit the Birth of the Buddha sculpture from the Kushan period and Pala-era bronzes discovered at Kurkihar.

What sets the Bihar Museum apart is its approach to storytelling, bringing together the people, traditions and journeys that have shaped the region rather than simply displaying objects from the past. Its Children's Gallery introduces younger visitors to science, wildlife and traditional art through interactive exhibits, while the diaspora gallery explores Bihar's cultural connections beyond its geographical boundaries. A restaurant serving regional cuisine adds another layer to the experience, allowing visitors to engage with the state's heritage beyond its galleries.

India has 1,176 officially recognised museums, yet many continue to grapple with inadequate infrastructure, poor lighting, staff shortages and limited digitisation. The Bihar Museum offers an example of what can be achieved when thoughtful architecture, accessible displays and engaging storytelling come together. Its recognition also brings into focus the need to invest in the country's wider museum landscape, ensuring that India's history is not only preserved but presented in ways that invite the world to explore it.
