India’s relationship with wine is older than most people assume. Literary records place winemaking in the country as far back as the 13th century BCE, yet the modern industry is barely four decades old. Chateau Indage was founded in 1986 by Shamrao Chougule in Narayangaon, Maharashtra, and its bottle-fermented sparkling wine, Omar Khayyam, was winning medals in UK competitions by the end of that decade, with advice from the Champagne house Piper-Heidsieck. Sula Vineyards followed in 1997, when Rajeev Samant returned to his native Nashik from Silicon Valley.

The bottles worth gifting this festive season arrive at a turning point for the imported wine. India has long levied duties of up to 150 per cent on imported wine, among the highest in the world, and the India–EU free trade agreement, concluded on January 27 2026, will cut that to 75 per cent and then taper it towards 20 per cent for premium wines once it comes into force. Until then, a well-chosen bottle remains one of the more considered gifts a guest can carry through the door.

The result is a red wine with vibrant fruit, balanced structure and a velvety texture. The 2026 festive edition is available at select fine-wine retail stores in Delhi NCR, Mumbai and Bengaluru. Penfolds has also released a similarly packaged Bin 2 Shiraz Mataro gift pack, offering a medium-bodied alternative with dark fruit and savoury notes.
