Jack Daniel's whisky spent nearly a century and a half using the same corn-heavy recipe before this rye arrived in 2016, its first new mash bill since 1866. It is built from 70 percent rye, 18 percent corn and 12 percent malted barley, then filtered through the same charcoal mellowing process that defines every other Jack Daniel's whisky. The resultant Jack Daniel's Single Barrel Rye Whisky leans towards being sweeter than most ryes, with banana, brown sugar and caramel up front, followed by a peppery, oak-driven finish.

Michter's traces its roots to a Pennsylvania distillery founded in 1753, a claim that lets the brand call itself America's oldest whisky. After the original distillery closed in 1989, the name was revived in Kentucky, eventually opening its own site inside the historic 1890 Fort Nelson building in downtown Louisville. Michter's US1 Single Barrel Rye Whisky profile consistently runs toward butterscotch, black pepper and orange, with a dry, spice-led finish.

Homestock has an unusual origin story even by whisky standards. In 2020, WhistlePig sent blending kits to whisky fans at home and let them vote on a final recipe over a livestream, choosing between three blends put together by the distillery's master blender. The winning combination was 45 percent Vermont rye, aged in Vermont oak, blended with Canadian wheat and barley whiskies, making it more of a rye-led blend than a pure rye. The result is the WhistlePig Homestock Whisky, which is soft and spice-forward, with toasted grain, nutmeg and a clean finish.

Templeton's story reaches back to Prohibition-era Iowa, when farmers around the town of Templeton distilled rye whisky that reportedly found its way to Al Capone's speakeasies in Chicago. The modern brand, relaunched in 2006, uses a high-rye mash bill of 95 percent rye and 5 percent malted barley, and has distilled its own whisky at a dedicated Iowa distillery since 2018. Templeton 6 Year Rye Whisky spends six years in charred oak that brings out cinnamon, green apple and a rounder, more rested character than younger ryes typically show.

Sazerac Rye whisky carries one of American whisky's oldest cocktail stories. Sazerac Straight Rye Whisky is made today at Buffalo Trace in Kentucky from a lower-rye mash bill, it offers clove, orange peel and vanilla, with a smooth, faintly liquorice finish.
