Anjuli Shukla
Vasudeo Santu Gaitonde (1924–2001), Padma Shri awardee, was a pioneering Indian abstract artist. Trained at Sir J. J. School of Art, he engaged with the Progressive Artists’ Group, shaping modern Indian abstraction.
Painted in 1970, VS Gaitonde’s untitled yellow canvas, layered with translucent ochre and subtle forms, was sold for an astonishing Rs 67.08 crore at the Saffronart auction in Delhi, marking it India’s second most expensive auctioned artwork.
In 2013, Gaitonde’s 1979 mustard-hued abstract fetched for over Rs 20 crore ($3.28 million) at Christie’s India, setting a record as the highest-selling modern and contemporary Indian artwork then.
In 2015, Gaitonde’s 1995 untitled painting was sold for an astounding Rs 29.3 crore ($4.4 million) at Christie’s India, surpassing previous records and cementing his status in Indian modern art.
In Pundole’s September 2020 auction, Gaitonde’s untitled 1974 oil-on-canvas fetched Rs 32 crore ($4.35 million), becoming the most expensive Indian artwork sold at that time.
In March 2021, Gaitonde’s 1961 blue-hued oil-on-canvas sold for Rs 39.98 crore ($5.55 million) at Saffronart, becoming India’s priciest artwork, inspired by the Arabian Sea and one of his final horizontal paintings.
