The rhythm of Delhi can often get a little loud and exhausting. It took just a 55-minute flight to Udaipur to change that completely. A gentle breeze welcomed me as I arrived at Raffles Lakeshore, the newest jewel in the crown of the iconic Raffles Udaipur.
Unlike its palace-island sibling, this extension of Raffles hugs the mainland and is easily accessible by car. A seamless 25-minute drive from the airport, and I am greeted with a cold towel, chilled tender coconut water, and a warm smile from my personal butler who has already taken charge of my bags. A violinist dressed in traditional Rajasthani attire plays in the background, and the breeze, generous and poetic, caresses my hair. This is the afternoon I needed. What made it even more special was that I was the first guest to step into the world of Lakeshore Raffles, a privilege in itself.

At the entrance, I am greeted with a distinct signature fragrance of rustic leather whispering old-world luxury. Frescoed walls, hand-painted motifs of Udaipur’s green expanses, and the regal Raffles architecture, all under the soft shimmer of a grand chandelier, catch my attention — all designed by renowned architect Clive Gray, who brings 35 years of expertise in blending traditional architecture with modern luxury.
In the Manor Suite, twin balconies frame the serene Udai Sagar Lake. A beautiful bubble bath awaits, accompanied by an elaborate cheese platter with artisanal crackers, a fresh basket of seasonal fruits, and a tray of personalised chocolates–all thoughtfully curated to make one feel at home.
Indulgent in All the Right Ways

For my first meal at the property, I am drawn to Italian comfort at The Trellis Room. The spaghetti is tossed live at the counter by executive chef Sandeep Rai, who takes a moment to chat. “The ingredients are the real heroes here,” he says. “We believe that food is at its most flavourful—and most meaningful—when it is grown close to home.”
He points to the vibrant vegetables, nurtured by local farmers, checking if I'd like some in my pasta. I swirl my fork around the spaghetti and smile. this is more than just a meal, it’s a story told in the basil and garlic.
Post-lunch, I find myself at the Tea Room with a cup of lemon tea. I sip slowly as I wander through the manicured gardens. The immaculate greens are more than just a visual delight. General manager Rajesh Namby shares how the gardens are lovingly tended by locals from surrounding villages. “It’s not just employment, it is empowerment,” he says. You know you are at a property with a soul when conversations like these unfold.

A power nap later, I head to Belvedere, the rooftop sunset spot that Raffles Lakeshore has crafted to be both indulgent and intimate. Alone, but never lonely, I sip sparkling tea and nibble on some snacks as the Udaipur skyline puts on a show. It is the kind of view that makes you believe again.
The most touching moment of my stay came at dinner. On my way in from the airport, I casually mentioned craving a Rajasthani thali. That night, the team surprised me with one at my table. The dal-baati, hare ghaas ki roti, and the memorable Matera hara pyaaz, their signature dish with a savoury-sweet burst of watermelon, were delicious. Dessert was the warmest hug that came in the form of malai-topped ghewar, soft, freshly made.

The next morning was easy, unhurried. Breakfast in bed was wheeled in on a trolley, a lavish spread I savoured while soaking in the spectacular view of the lake. Rare birds cooed at my window, signalling a simpler world, one in tune with nature.
Goodbyes sting the most when you are leaving behind a team who became family in no time, countless memories and a kind of magic you can't quite explain.
The stay at Raffles Lakeshore was a reminder that true luxury isn’t always about just being opulent; sometimes, it slows time, strips away the noise, and draws you inward.
