The world of luxury lost a true icon and luminous visionary with the passing of its Chairman Emeritus, Leonard A. Lauder, on June 14 at the age of 92, at his home in Manhattan, New York City. The businessman who transformed Estée Lauder into one of the world's foremost cosmetic empires leaves behind a legacy that defined not just a global beauty powerhouse, but the very language of beauty itself.
Born in 1933 in New York City, Lauder was more than the heir to Estée Lauder Companies. He was the architect who transformed a family-run brand into a $100-billion global powerhouse synonymous with refinement, aspiration and innovation.
A graduate of the Wharton School, a navy officer, and later a Columbia Business School alumnus, Lauder brought discipline, instinct and vision to the brand when he officially joined in 1958.
Under his stewardship of over six decades, he guided its transformation from a single-brand boutique to a global luxury conglomerate encompassing iconic names like Clinique, La Mer, Jo Malone London, Lab Series, MAC Cosmetics, Aveda, Aramis, Bobbi Brown Cosmetics and Tom Ford, among others. He pioneered department store counters that felt like salons, brought dermatologist-led skincare to the forefront, and understood, far before it became industry standard, the need to marry science with sensorial experience.
Lauder’s role went far beyond the boardroom. As President, CEO and later Chairman, he was revered as the “chief teaching officer,” mentoring generations of talent and cultivating a company culture rooted in kindness and innovation. Employees remember him for his warmth and ability to spot the next great idea long before it became a trend.
But his impact extended far beyond beauty. A dedicated philanthropist, Lauder made landmark contributions to the arts, healthcare and education. His $1 billion 78-piece collection of Cubist art donation to The Met remains one of the largest in the museum’s history, and his funding of Alzheimer’s and cancer research, including the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, continues to save lives.
“Throughout his life, my father worked tirelessly to build and transform the beauty industry, pioneering many of the innovations, trends, and best practices that are foundational to the industry today,” said William P. Lauder, son and Chair, board of directors, The Estée Lauder Companies.
Echoing a similar sentiment, Gary M. Lauder, son and member, board of directors, The Estée Lauder Companies added, “His energy, sharp intellect, and generous spirit touched the lives of so many across the world.”
Even in his final years, Lauder remained actively involved in Estée Lauder Companies, embodying the values of legacy and loyalty. He believed that true wealth lies in people—and through his leadership, generosity, and foresight, he built more than a brand. He built a lasting influence.
Remembering his brother, Ronald S. Lauder, Chairman, Clinique Laboratories, LLC at The Estée Lauder Companies, said, “Leonard was a wonderful brother and a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, colleague and friend. But his legacy extends far beyond being the heart of our family. His impact will be felt for generations to come thanks to his tireless philanthropy, advocacy, and creativity in tackling some of the world’s greatest challenges. The number of lives he touched and positively impacted across all his endeavours is immeasurable. His passion and generosity have inspired us all, and there are no words to express how much he will be missed.”
Throughout his lifetime, Lauder was honoured with a myriad of awards, including the “Lone Sailor” Award given by the US Navy Supply Corps Foundation, the Légion d’Honneur given by the government of France, and he was also inducted into the Retail Hall of Fame by the World Retail Congress. In 2014, he was named a Living Landmark by the New York Landmarks Conservancy.
Lauder shared many of the lessons he learned in business and life in his memoir, The Company I Keep: My Life in Beauty, published to great acclaim in 2020.
Survived by his sons William and Gary Lauder, his wife Judy Glickman Lauder, and a legacy etched in every gold-capped bottle, Lauder’s name will forever remain synonymous with refinement, resilience and the art of beauty.
