Step into the Makaibari Bungalow and be transported to a world where old-world charm meets curated quiet luxury. Much like the iconic Harrods Tea Room in London, this immersive space at Taj Bengal, Kolkata, exudes a palette of deep green hues, warm walnut wood, brass accents, and plush handcrafted furnishings — evoking a sense of timeless elegance.
Inspired by the interiors of a planter’s bungalow nestled in the tea estates of Kurseong, the 1,500 sq.ft. space blends indoor and outdoor grace with an old-world sensibility. A cosy living room, fireplace, curated tea library and heirloom-inspired carpets, they all invite slow exploration. Within this atmospheric retreat, design duo Abraham & Thakore unveiled their newest tableware collection—as sensorial and storied as the first pour—where heritage is not preserved, but lived.
This collaboration marks the designer duos first retail presence in Kolkata, introducing a collection that is an ode to slow living and refined Indian craft. Inspired by Bengal’s rich textile heritage, it embodies the tactile beauty of handcrafted design--the delicate artistry of Kantha, the intricate patterns of Bandhani, and the timeless weave of Ikat. It reflects meticulous craftsmanship, designed to complement refined living spaces.
“Bringing our work to Kolkata for the first time in partnership with Makaibari Bungalow has been a truly special moment for us. The city’s cultural richness and appreciation for craftsmanship align seamlessly with our design philosophy. This collection is our tribute to artistry, reimagined for contemporary living,” say Abraham & Thakore who launched the collection in April this year.
“This has always been a place where heritage and modernity co-exist. Through collaborations like this, we aim to celebrate and sustain the artistry of Bengal, offering a space where design and tradition come together in meaningful ways,” adds Rudra Chatterjee, managing director of Luxmi Tea Group and owner of Makaibari Bungalow.
Exclusively available at Makaibari Bungalow and the Abraham & Thakore store, the collection is priced between Rs 3,500 and Rs 8,000. It is thoughtfully designed to serve as a keepsake, a gesture of refined taste, or a meaningful gift.
“When we introduced the new Makaibari Bungalow Experiential, our goal was to unite the finest elements of the Luxmi Group’s diverse worlds under one roof. We aimed to transcend mere decor or tea, striving to deliver a comprehensive experience that encompasses all we have to offer. The overwhelmingly positive response we’ve received affirms that our vision was on the right path. Today’s consumer seeks more than a single offering—they crave a holistic experience, and we’re thrilled to meet that desire,” says Chatterjee.
Beyond its exceptional tea blends, the curated collection at the Makaibari Bungalow includes meticulously crafted textiles such as carpets, cushions, and table linens; elegant home décor items like tableware, tea-ware, and plantation furniture; as art and artefacts. Each piece, including the accent furniture, reflects the company’s century-old legacy and commitment to eco-friendly, sustainable craftsmanship, ensuring a positive impact on both the environment and the communities involved.
Adding a deeper cultural layer to the space, specially commissioned Kalighat paintings by Anwar Chitrakaar, son of the legendary Amar Chitrakaar, infuse the Makaibari Bungalow with a vibrant visual homage to the estate. These evocative works beautifully bridge the brand’s storied heritage with Bengal’s rich artistic legacy.
“Makaibari is more than just a tea estate; it embodies a philosophy of living in harmony with nature and heritage. This store reflects our vision of creating a space where visitors can immerse themselves in the timeless elegance of handcrafted luxury, from tea to textiles and furniture. We invite everyone to experience the essence of the Luxmi Group through this cohesive environment—where heritage, craftsmanship, and community come together,” says Chatterjee.
In fact, the store also has a dedicated tea bar and tea tasting section where guests can savour freshly brewed teas while being transported to the lush tea estates of Makaibari, vividly evoked through the immersive wall art.
For those seeking bespoke, handcrafted luxury or an immersive experience in a lifestyle rooted in tradition and sustainability, the Makaibari Bungalow offers a rarefied journey.
Come for the tea, stay for the stories, and take home a piece of timeless craft.
