Tigers are an integral part of the identity of India. You'd find them in folklores, in national narratives, in iconography and several other places. India accounts for about 80 per cent of the global population of tigers. Within the country, the tiger density is spread across reserves and jungles of Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka and Assam. Over the years, these magnificent big cats have garnered as much awe and fascination as they have inspired tourism. While they remain one of the central attractions, they reside alongside leopards, Asiatic lions, one-horned rhinoceros and wild elephants. To have an intimate experience with this side of the wild, the country offers several luxury jungle and safari lodges, where you can reset your life, otherwise immured in the metropolitan. Sitting on the edge of Ranthambore National Park and Tiger Reserve in the Sawai Madhopur district, Oberoi Vanyavilas resort occupies 20 acres of densely landscaped greens. It was the first luxury tented jungle resort built in India and now has 28 air-conditioned tents, inspired by the royal travelling caravans that once crossed the country. Each tent has a canopied king-size bed, teak wood flooring and a claw-footed standalone bathtub, with a private walled garden attached. An observation tower on the grounds looks out over the surrounding jungle, and the in-house restaurant serves Rajasthani and international menus.

Around 2.5km from the park's entrance gate, Sher Bagh sits on four hectares of forested land that the owning family has replanted over recent decades as part of a rewilding project. The camp has 12 hand-stitched canvas tents fitted with custom campaign furniture and private verandas, arranged around a central campfire area. It is a member of Relais & Châteaux. Guests get two safari drives a day with in-house naturalists, and much of what's served at dinner is grown in the camp's own garden.

Bordered on two sides by the Kabini River, this lodge sits between Nagarhole and Bandipur National Parks. Its design takes cues from the Hadi settlements of the local Kadu Kuruba community, and the property has 30 huts with thatched roofs, private verandas and, in some categories, private pools. Wildlife here includes elephants, gaur and leopards, spotted on both jeep drives and boat safaris along the river; more than 250 bird species have been recorded in the area. A coracle ride — the traditional round boat used on the Kabini — is on offer too.

Diphlu River Lodge sits on National Highway 37, close to the Bagori forest range office in Kaziranga National Park — a UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to the largest population of one-horned rhinoceros anywhere in the world. The lodge was built by the Phookan family, who have run properties in the area since the 1970s, and has 12 air-conditioned cottages in bamboo and thatch, raised on stilts above the paddy fields, overlooking the Diphlu River. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Prince William and Catherine, stayed here on their 2016 visit to India. Activities include dawn elephant safaris and boat trips on the Brahmaputra, where Gangetic river dolphins are sometimes seen.

Samode is located at a most tasteful spot in Tala, just off Bandhavgarh National Park. What makes it tasteful is the reserve that covers around 450 square kilometres and known for one of the highest tiger densities in India, as well as ancient rock caves and cave paintings. The lodge has 12 independent villas and each comes with a living area, a bedroom with an en-suite bathroom, a dressing area, an open-air bath court and a private verandah. The property has an outdoor pool and spa, and organises safaris plus cycling trips out to the nearby Mardari village.
