Built in 2000 by a family of wildlife filmmakers, Sher Bagh claims to be one of the finest stations from which to explore the billion-year-old forest that is Aravalli. The property was among India's first luxury tented camps and sits right on the edge of Ranthambhore. It has 12 tented suites with brass bathtubs and stone showers, done up in 1920s campaign style with rosewood furniture. The Royal Sher Suite adds a private plunge pool and outdoor fireplace. It's a Relais & Châteaux member and holds a Michelin Key.

In Rajasthan, this particular property swaps tigers for leopards as its prized highlight. Set between Udaipur and Jodhpur at the foot of the Aravalli Hills, Sujan Jawai has around ten tents, including a Royal Tented Suite, built amid granite outcrops and dry riverbeds where leopards roam outside any formal reserve. The area is also home to Rabari herders who have forever lived a life shared with leopards of the area, and the camp organises visits to their villages alongside the game drives. Standing at the threshold of Ranthambore, Aman's Rajasthan camp has just 13 tents that are Mughal-styled on a 10-acre plot in the Aravalli foothills. Each Tented Pavilion measures 108 sq m, with a bedroom, living area, dining space and a bathroom with a freestanding tub. The camp's pool is modelled on the region's old stepwells, and guests get twice-daily jeep safaris with an assigned guide. It's an international brand, but the camp itself is entirely Rajasthan-based.
