The idea of forest-bathing comes from shinrin-yoku, the Japanese practice of slowing down in a natural setting and consciously engaging with its sights, sounds and textures, engaging all senses. In recent times, India's luxury hospitality has increasingly gravitated towards forest-bathing, incorporating wellness programmes and more coming across various properties, especially those ensconced in deep forests. Here is a list of five properties that offer forest-bathing as an immersive experience rather than having it as one of the selling points on paper.

Situated in Jim Corbett National Park, Aahana Resort & Spa spans 13.5 acres of what once used to be largely barren land. The property now boasts of 4,500 trees and a substantial avian population. Tariff: Current published booking rates start at about Rs. 45,000 per night for a villa, before taxes, with the final rate varying by category and date.

Dharana at Shillim, Maharashtra

In the Sahyadris, Dharana at Shillim is a dedicated wellness retreat spread across 2,500 acres of protected landscape. Forest-bathing here is a highlight, not simply as an optional walk around the estate but incorporated in its day-to-day life. Dharana's wellness programmes also include nature walks and treks in the UNESCO-Sahyadris led by professionals. Accommodation here ranges from Hillside and Forest Villas to private pool villas and larger residences, while the retreat combines Ayurveda, modern health assessments, yoga and other wellness disciplines.

SwaSwara, Gokarna, Karnataka

SwaSwara is a 26-acre wellness retreat near Om Beach—address to Mahabaleshwara Temple—where forested grounds sit between the Western Ghats and the Arabian Sea. The property has 24 Konkan-style villas, a hilltop yoga deck, medicinal plants and nature trails.
