Why Swiss Watches Cost More In India: The Craftsmanship, Taxes And Brand Premium

Movement construction, finishing, import duties and brand positioning all contribute to the price of a Swiss Watch. But does buying one overseas actually save you money?

Swiss watches command high prices due to intricate craftsmanship, premium materials, and brand heritage. In India, additional costs like import duties, GST, and currency fluctuations further elevate prices, making them more expensive compared to other markets.

A Swiss watch can cost several lakhs of rupees, with complicated and precious-metal models reaching considerably higher prices. Yet the number on the price tag accounts for more than the materials used to make it. The movement inside the case, the hours spent finishing its components, the research behind its engineering and the reputation of the watchmaker all contribute to its value. In India, import duties, GST and currency movements add further considerations.

For buyers comparing prices across markets, however, there is an important distinction between a watch being expensive and it being more expensive in India than elsewhere.

What Goes Into The Price Of A Swiss Watch?

Movement construction, finishing and brand positioning all contribute to the cost of a Swiss timepiece.

At the heart of a mechanical watch is its movement, the assembly responsible for keeping time. A basic movement requires precision-engineered components, while more elaborate calibres incorporate additional mechanisms and functions. A chronograph measures elapsed time, a perpetual calendar accounts for variations in the calendar, and a tourbillon is designed to counter certain effects of gravity on timekeeping. Each additional complication introduces greater mechanical complexity and more demanding assembly and adjustment.

Finishing also influences the final price. Components may be bevelled, polished, brushed or decorated, including surfaces that are visible only when the case is opened. The level of hand-finishing, the complexity of the movement and the time spent assembling and regulating it can distinguish one watch from another, even when the two look similar on the wrist.

Materials matter, too. Stainless steel, titanium, ceramic, gold and platinum have different costs and manufacturing requirements. Sapphire crystals, specialised alloys and proprietary technologies can add to the bill. A watch's price also reflects quality-control procedures, certification, research and development, after-sales support and the infrastructure required to manufacture it.

Then there is the brand itself. Heritage, design recognition, limited production and demand all influence positioning. A watchmaker's name can command a premium, but the size of that premium varies by brand and model.

How Import Duties Affect Prices In India

Chronographs, perpetual calendars and tourbillons require additional mechanical components and more complex assembly.

Taxes are an important part of the calculation. Imported Swiss watches entering India have historically faced substantial customs duties, alongside the 18 per cent GST applicable to watches. The precise landed cost depends on the product classification, customs valuation and applicable levies.

India's trade agreement with the European Free Trade Association (EFTA), which includes Switzerland, began taking effect in October 2025. Under the agreement, tariffs on Swiss watches are being reduced in stages. Luxury Tribune reported that the applicable import duty fell to approximately 15.71 per cent in January 2026, with a phased reduction to zero planned by 2031.

The reduction does not automatically translate into an equivalent drop in retail prices. Brands and retailers must account for exchange rates, operating costs, distribution and their pricing strategies. The Swiss franc's strength against the rupee has also offset some of the potential benefit of lower tariffs, according to Rado chief executive Adrian Bosshard.

Is the Same Watch Cheaper Overseas?

India’s import duties on Swiss watches are being reduced in stages under the India-EFTA trade agreement.

Not necessarily. The answer depends on the exact reference, the country of purchase, local taxes, exchange rates and the price set by the brand.

A meaningful comparison must use the same model, reference number, material, bracelet and movement. Its official Indian retail price should then be compared with the overseas price after accounting for local sales tax or VAT, currency conversion and any refund available to eligible visitors. Buyers bringing a watch into India must also consider applicable customs requirements and charges.

India's higher import duties have not always resulted in proportionately higher retail prices. In a 2022 analysis, Ethos reported that Indian luxury-watch prices were broadly comparable with key overseas shopping destinations despite customs duties and GST. The retailer said brands and retailers had absorbed part of the additional cost to keep local pricing competitive. That finding is useful context, though prices and tariff structures have since changed.

Buying locally can also offer practical advantages, including an authorised retailer, access to the brand's international warranty and after-sales service, and clearer recourse if a watch requires attention. Overseas purchases may be worthwhile, but the saving should be calculated rather than assumed.

The Premium Beyond The Price Tag

The 18 per cent GST on watches adds to the cost of purchasing a Swiss timepiece in India.

India's Swiss-watch market is attracting a younger generation of buyers, with growing interest in mechanical movements, heritage and craftsmanship. Deloitte's 2024 Swiss Watch Industry Insights report identified Gen Z and millennials as important drivers of demand, while more recent reporting suggests consumers are becoming increasingly attentive to watchmaking itself rather than brand recognition alone.

That shift makes understanding the price more relevant. A Swiss watch's retail value is shaped by the mechanics inside it, the work required to finish and assemble it, the brand's position in the market and the taxes attached to bringing it into India. No single factor explains the entire cost.

For anyone considering a purchase, the more useful question is not simply whether a Swiss watch costs less abroad. It is what the price buys, how the same reference compares across markets, and whether the difference remains meaningful after taxes, currency conversion and ownership considerations are factored in.
