Icons on the Wrist: The Tudor Black Bay 39 S&G Is the Two-Tone Watch That Got Everything Right

In the latest episode of Icons on the Wrist, Tudor's most versatile Black Bay variant makes a compelling case for two-tone watchmaking.

Team Robb Report India

The Tudor Black Bay 39 S&G pays homage to the brand’s 1950s and 1960s dive watches, pairing a domed dial and crystal with a 39mm steel case and yellow gold bezel, crown, and bracelet centre links. Powered by the in-house MT5602 calibre with silicon balance spring and 70-hour reserve, this COSC-certified model was discontinued at Watches and Wonders 2026, making current inventory finite.

Tudor was founded in 1926 by Hans Wilsdorf, the same man behind Rolex, with the explicit intention of offering comparable watchmaking at a more accessible price point. The Black Bay line launched in 2012, its design drawing directly from Tudor's professional diving references of the 1950s and 1960s. The S&G designation, standing for ‘Steel and Gold’, was introduced in 2017 as the line's two-tone proposition, placing yellow gold on the bezel, crown, and bracelet centre links against a stainless steel case and bracelet. The 39mm is the line's mid-size reference.

The Case and Dial

The Black Bay 39 S&G sits in a 39mm stainless steel case with a polished and satin finish, paired with a five-link steel and yellow gold bracelet secured by Tudor's T-fit folding clasp with safety catch. The overall shape, including the domed dial and crystal, references Tudor's first divers' watches directly, with the bezel and crown in yellow gold. The dial is silver with a sunburst finish. Gold-capped accents appear on the crown and clasp logo. The crystal is flat sapphire. Water resistance is rated to 100 metres.

The Black Bay 39 S&G was discontinued at Watches and Wonders 2026, making it the last three-hand Black Bay to carry a date. The S&G designation continues in the Black Bay GMT S&G and Black Bay Chrono S&G, but the original standard Black Bay S&G in the three-hand configuration is no longer in production. Existing authorised dealer stock is what remains.
