Jim Thompson and Bill Bensley unite to create 'Wild,' a vibrant collection inspired by Southeast Asia's rainforests. This collaboration blends Bensley's imaginative artistry with Thompson's textile expertise, offering ready-to-wear fashion, accessories, and home decor that celebrate nature and craftsmanship.

For luxury brands, creative collaborations have been a unique way of storytelling and reaching out to newer demographics. However, there are some artistic alliances which stand out thanks to a seamless integration of shared values, beliefs, vision and metier. A case in point being Jim Thompson and Bill Bensely's recent artistic alliance which launched 'Wild' a ready-to-wear and accessories collection. The global lifestyle brand from Thailand initiates an artistic dialogue with architect, interior designer, artist and landscape architect Bill Bensley to create an exclusive line inspired by the flora and fauna inhabiting the rainforests in Southeast Asia. This coming together of two vibrant worlds superimposes Bensley’s imaginative visual lexicon with Jim Thompson’s textile expertise and savoir-faire.

Bensley’s association with the lifestyle brand began with his restoration of the gardens at the Jim Thompson House, marking the start of a longstanding creative relationship. Their other recent collaboration includes the 2026 Wild Collection by Bill Bensley for Jim Thompson Home Furnishings.

On the mood board of Wild are Southeast Asia’s largest remaining continuous rainforest which come to life through Bensley’s playful lens in paintings sublimated with lush, layered foliage, vibrant hues and distinctive animal characters. Ella the Elephant, Douglas the Dhole, Tony the Tiger and Ollie the Owl - the fantastical inhabitants appear throughout the collection inspiring desirability along with a need to preserve their habitat. Conceived during the pandemic, the artworks take on singular silhouettes shaping up menswear, womenswear, silk scarves, bags and home decor, infusing the spirit of the wild into everyday life.

An Exceptionally Creative Partnership

The collection draws inspiration from Southeast Asia’s rainforests, translating their rich biodiversity into vibrant prints, layered foliage and imaginative animal illustrations.

Robb Report caught up with Frank Cancelloni - Group CEO of Jim Thompson and Bill Bensely on the design process and the deeper symbolism behind it. Jim Thompson has long been associated with Thai silk and the exploration of the art of Thai craftsmanship and Bill Bensley proved to be an apt artistic ally to reimagine the brand’s heritage through a contemporary collection. "Bill is an extraordinary creative talent whose imagination, artistic expression, and distinctive design language resonate naturally with our DNA. We share a passion for craftsmanship, storytelling, and pushing creative boundaries," says Jim. What makes Bill particularly special is his ability to bring together art, nature, and design in a way that is both unexpected and highly expressive. His bold use of colours, imaginative characters, and interpretation of the natural world complement JT’s heritage of vibrant prints, intricate textiles, and artistic exploration. "For us, this collaboration is not about reinventing our heritage, but about giving it a fresh and contemporary expression through the eyes of an exceptional creative partner," he adds.

For Bill, the starting point for this collection was the wildlife living in the rainforests of Southeast Asia. He spends a great deal of time trying to protect these creatures, and quite a lot of time painting them. "Nature supplies extraordinary characters; I merely persuade them to stand still on paper. It began with fabrics for furniture and homewares. Then I started wondering why the cushions should have all the fun," shares Bill.

Rainforest: An Artistic Canvas

The design approach balances artistic expression with everyday wearability.

The rainforest is a complex canvas of textures, hues, patterns and surprising juxtapositions. Bill translated that richness into a visual language for clothing and accessories by deciding how much wildlife each piece could comfortably accommodate. "Some paintings need a generous surface; sometimes a single animal does the job beautifully. We kept the clothes simple, so the drawings had room. Not every piece needs the entire jungle. Some days, one entire elephant is quite enough," he shares. It was a seamless match as the Jim Thompson universe has always admired Bill’s artistic acumen and his ability to transform imagination into compelling visual experiences. "His artistic universe is colourful, playful, unconventional, and full of personality, which makes it a wonderful complement to our creative spirit," says Frank. He saw an opportunity to bring Bill's original artworks into a new context, translating them into wearable fashion and lifestyle pieces through JT's textile expertise. The result is an extensive collection, rather than a capsule, spanning multiple categories, including ready-to-wear for both men and women, accessories, placemats, coasters and more. "The collection introduces a more adventurous and playful dimension to our brand, demonstrating how two creative worlds can come together to create something genuinely fresh and unexpected," adds Frank.

Reinforcing ‘Beyond Silk’ Philosophy

The collaboration reinforces Jim Thompson’s ‘Beyond Silk’ philosophy.

For Jim Thompson, Frank's vision is to become the first global lifestyle brand from Asia with a universe that extends well beyond silk. Fashion is already an important part of the business, and collaborations such as this allow the brand to strengthen its contemporary fashion positioning while connecting with new audiences. "This collab is a perfect expression of this evolution. It brings together fashion, art, craftsmanship, and lifestyle in a collection that is expressive, versatile, and relevant to how people dress and live today. Importantly, it reinforces our 'Beyond Silk' philosophy, demonstrating that Jim Thompson is no longer defined by a single material or product category, but has evolved into a global lifestyle brand with a distinctive creative identity rooted in Thai craftsmanship, heritage, and contemporary design," informs Frank. The joyous offerings prove that Bill likes creating pieces that reward a second look. "The rainforest is excellent company in that respect: the longer you look, the stranger it gets. A hotel gives me acres to play with; a shirt makes me edit. Probably healthy," says Bill. He deliberately kept the clothes simple; T-shirts and other generous surfaces that give the paintings room to behave much as they do on canvas. "I thought about scale and placement, certainly, but the artwork supplies the commotion. The clothes have the good manners to stay out of its way," he quips.

Respecting The Creative Identities

The collection extends across multiple lifestyle categories, including menswear, womenswear, silk scarves, bags, placemats, coasters and other home furnishings.

The key was to respect the creative identities of both Bill Bensley and Jim Thompson while allowing each to complement the other. "Generous cuts, comfortable clothes and absolutely no obligation to be beige," adds Bill. He started with shapes he understood, big shirts and kaftans with room to breathe. "If you’re comfortable, you can carry off quite a lot of wildlife. And nobody has to wear the whole rainforest. Start with a bag if you’re nervous," he says.

Bill brought his imagination, with vibrant Southeast Asia rainforest-inspired imagery, expressive characters, and bold compositions. Jim Thompson contributed its expertise in textiles, print development, craftsmanship, and contemporary fashion design. "Our design team worked to translate Bill’s artworks into pieces that are not only visually striking but also wearable, comfortable, and consistent with our aesthetic. The collection maintains Bill’s unmistakable artistic personality while reflecting our signature approach to colour, prints, materials, and craftsmanship," says Frank. The approach was to preserve the richness of Bill's colours, the intricacy of his illustrations, and the playful energy of his compositions while carefully adapting them to different fabrics, silhouettes, and product applications. Moreover, the collection incorporates materials such as silk, linen, and AQUASILK® (a nylon-silk blend used in our men’s swimwear collection), allowing the artwork to take on different expressions, from fluid and refined silhouettes to bold, contemporary pieces that combine artistic creativity with everyday versatility. "What makes this association particularly compelling is how art becomes part of everyday life. Bill’s paintings are no longer confined to the canvas; they become something people can wear, experience, and enjoy," says Frank. For Bill, the extraordinary number of ways one can make fabric has been a revelation. "I’ve spent decades designing hotels; here was an opportunity to be a beginner again. Apparently, I still haven’t had enough of asking stupid questions. It’s been a wonderful adventure," says Bill. Spoken like a true visionary!
