The headline change on the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max is the new 48MP Fusion Main camera with variable aperture. For the first time ever, iPhone users can control how much light enters the lens and how much of a scene remains in focus. The system can also adjust the aperture automatically, particularly in darker environments, while new Pro controls allow users to manually change aperture, shutter speed and white balance. All three rear cameras are now 48MP: the Fusion Main, Fusion Ultra Wide and Fusion Telephoto. The telephoto system offers up to 8x optical-quality zoom, with a 16x optical-quality zoom range. The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max camera feel a little less like a point-and-shoot and more like a proper creative instrument.
The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max come in several colours including Black, Silver, Glacier and Burgundy, with 6.3-inch and 6.9-inch displays respectively.
Both iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max are powered by Apple's new A20 Pro chip, built using 2-nanometre process technology. Apple says it has 50 percent more memory bandwidth than A19 Pro, while its seven-core GPU is up to 40 percent faster. A redesigned vapor chamber with three times the surface area of the previous generation is also designed to keep the phones cooler.
The iPhone 18 Pro Max gets the biggest battery-life increase yet. eSIM-only models are rated for up to 45 hours of video playback, while the iPhone 18 Pro reaches up to 36 hours. The Pro Max can also deliver around seven hours of video playback from five minutes of wired charging.
One of the more intriguing additions is Apple Reference Image. The feature creates an unalterable reference image from signed sensor data captured when the photograph is taken, allowing users to compare it with the edited version. In an era increasingly crowded with AI-generated imagery, that makes the feature particularly interesting for photographers and creators.
Apple hasn't simply made the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max faster, it has made them more valuable for users, especially in the camera department. And then there is a big battery backup.
