Age is a very interesting currency in the whisky world, indicating value in terms of flavour and even deciding rates. But a remarkable age statement means little without a story behind the cask in which the whisky has been matured. The oldest whiskies released in 2026 bring together decades of maturation, distillery milestones and some exceptionally small bottle counts. The lineup includes The Balvenie 1931 Collection 88-Year-Old, The GlenDronach 56-Year-Old, Glenmorangie 50-Year-Old, Glenury Royal 1970 55-Year-Old whisky and Stranahan's Mountain Angel 14-Year-Old whiskey. From a Speyside single malt whisky distilled before the Second World War to an American whiskey finished in Hungarian Tokaji wine casks, these releases offer a fascinating look at how time and maturation shape a spirit. Here is what each whisky bottle brings to the table, along with its reported international price.
The Balvenie 1931 Collection 88-Year-Old is among the most extraordinary releases of 2026. Distilled on March 5, 1931, the Speyside single malt whisky spent 88 years in a refill sherry butt before being bottled in 2019. Its 2026 unveiling, in collaboration with artist Daniel Arsham, introduces just 17 bottles worldwide. The presentation features a sculptural case incorporating bronze, oak and copper from a decommissioned distillery still.

Marking the Highland distillery's 200th anniversary, The GlenDronach Aged 56 Years is its oldest official bottling. Distilled in September 1968, the whisky initially matured in three Oloroso sherry casks before being transferred into Spanish oak Pedro Ximenez hogsheads in 2014. Bottled at 44.9% ABV, the anniversary expression is limited to 200 bottles worldwide.
The GlenDronach 56-Year-Old whisky price: €50,000 (approx).
Part of Diageo's inaugural Rare Series, this 1970 vintage comes from Glenury Royal, a Highland distillery that closed in 1985. The whisky initially matured in American oak hogsheads before being married in European oak puncheons. Only 232 bottles were produced.
Glenury Royal 1970 55-Year-Old whisky price: US$6,350 (approx).
Glenmorangie's oldest-ever bottling began with spirit distilled in the 1970s using some of the last barley malted at its own floor maltings. Master Distiller Dr Bill Lumsden brought together bourbon- and sherry-matured whiskies in 1999 before allowing the marriage to mature for another 25 years in an old bourbon cask. Only 149 bottles of Glenmorangie 50-Year-Old Single Malt Scotch whisky were produced, each presented in a bespoke porcelain vessel by ceramicists Peter and Laurie Pincus.
Glenmorangie 50-Year-Old whisky price: £25,800 (approx).
Colorado's high-altitude maturation takes centre stage in Stranahan's oldest release to date. The American single malt spends 10 years in new charred American oak, followed by three years and three months in Cognac casks and a final nine-month finish in Hungarian Tokaji wine casks. Bottled at 47.3% ABV, it brings a different perspective to a list otherwise dominated by aged Scotch whiskies.
Stranahan's Mountain Angel 14-Year-Old whiskey price: US$129.99 for a 750 ml bottle (approx).
From an 88-year-old Speyside whisky to a 14-year-old Colorado single malt whiskey, these releases demonstrate that age is only one part of the appeal. The distillery's character, cask history and the decisions made by its whisky makers are what ultimately make these whiskies worth remembering.
