American whiskey is having an interesting moment. At the 2026 American Whiskey Masters, organised by The Spirits Business as part of its Global Spirits Masters Competitions (GSMC), six panels of judges blind-tasted hundreds of whiskeys across categories including bourbon, rye, Tennessee whiskey and American single malt whiskey. The competition awarded Master, Gold and Silver medals before naming one overall Taste Master. Here we take a look at the top ones across categories. The biggest honour in the competition went to Ampersand Aureus whiskey. Created by Chip Tate, founder of the Texan distillery Balcones, the whiskey earned a Master medal in the Bourbon – Ultra-Premium category and was named the competition's one and only Taste Master. As per a judge, the notes were "big and waxy with heavy spice and eye-watering pepper.” The whiskey has an unusual combination of intensity and approachability.
Ampersand Aureus Whiskey Award: Taste Master And Master.
Traveller Full Proof whiskey takes things in a much stronger direction. The cask-strength expression from Traveller Whiskey earned a Master medal in the Blended – Super-Premium category. At 60.5% ABV, there is no shortage of power. The judges found toffee apples on the palate and described the whiskey as spicy. They said the high alcohol content was handled well too.

Buffalo Trace whiskey is one of the best-known names in American whiskey, and its flagship Bourbon earned a Master in the Bourbon – Premium category. The judges found sweet vanilla and caramel to start, followed by spicy, rye-like notes, with a freshness reminiscent of eucalyptus adding one more layer. You can drink it neat too.

Warfield Idaho Highlands whiskey represents one of American whiskey's newer frontiers. American single malt whiskey was officially established as a category in late 2024, and Idaho's Sun Valley Distillery earned a Master medal in the Single Malt Aged up to 7 Years category with this expression. Judge Marie Cheong-Thong highlighted its “green nose” and “lovely rounded finish,” giving the whiskey a distinctive showing in the competition.
Warfield Idaho Highlands American Single Malt Whiskey Award: Master.
Few American whiskey names are as familiar as Jim Beam. The flagship Jim Beam Kentucky Straight Bourbon whiskey picked up Gold medals in both the premium and no-age-statement Bourbon category. The judges praised its 'peanut brittle' aroma and well-balanced sweetness. It is a classic Bourbon expression that still made an impression in a blind tasting.

Perhaps that is the most interesting thing about American whiskey right now: there is no single definition of what it should taste like. The category is still evolving, and bottles like these suggest that the most compelling part may be seeing where distillers take it next.
